When you first decide to create a blog, one of the first things you should decide on is what you are going to blog about!
If you are interested in gaining followers and making any type of income with your blog, it needs to be focused, informational and entertaining. When considering what you will be blogging about, stop and think about your own interests.
When you get online, what do you Google? What is it that really sparks your curiosity or what do you know a lot about and don't mind learning MORE about?
A lot of people will give you this big schpeal about checking the search engines to see what other people are looking at and what is popular at the moment, but I think that if you are going to be blogging about something, it had better be something that you, yourself are interested in! You will be doing a lot of reading, writing and researching on this subject. If you pick something you have absolutely NO interest in just because some search engine is telling you OTHER people like it, you will quickly lose interest and your blogging efforts will be for naught.
This all comes back to my post on being authentic. You don't have to be a people pleaser. And especially on your blog. You can write about what is interesting to you. About what has inspired you. About what you have learned and how you have used it to solve a specific problem.
The beauty of having your own website or blog is that it is a reflection of YOU. Your passions, YOUR dreams, YOUR experience.
Now, having said that, let me expand on another thing you should keep in mind and that is you don't want your topics to become too broad. Sub-topics are wonderful, but you don't want to get too far away from your main theme. If you are interested in say.... Star Trek and Gardening... well, I wouldn't combine the two topics unless you found a way to have Spock weed your flower patch. Two completely different subjects - two completely different sites.
If you are new to blogging, I would start with just one. Until you get into the habit of writing every day, learning how to drive traffic to your site and gaining a following, one is enough, believe me! LOL!
So, take some time, choose your topic. Do some research. Apply your own experiences. And Blog!
